Moments before Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Sept. 27, Hezbollah launched a series of rocket attacks targeting Israeli settlements in northern Israel.
In an official announcement, Hezbollah articulated its motivations for the attacks, framing them as a response to Israeli aggression against Lebanon and as support for the Palestinian people in Gaza. (Related: Hezbollah fires BALLISTIC MISSILE targeting Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv.)
The group declared: “In support of our steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their valiant and honorable resistance, in defense of Lebanon and its people, and in response to the barbaric Israeli attacks on our cities, villages, and civilians, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance bombed the Ilania settlement with a salvo of Fadi 1 missiles.”
This marked their fourth military operation of the day. Earlier, Hezbollah targeted the city of Tiberias for the second time with missile salvos and began its operations with a strike on Kiryat Ata near the major coastal city of Haifa. Fadi 1 missiles reportedly damaged the settlement.
Eyewitness accounts and social media footage revealed rockets striking various locations across the Galilee and Haifa area, sending residents into panic. Sirens echoed in communities such as Dafna and Shaar Yashuf, signaling the grave nature of the situation as civilians scrambled for safety.
The ongoing Israeli air campaign has resulted in staggering casualties. Reports indicate that over 700 individuals have been killed and more than 2,000 injured across Lebanon since the escalation began earlier in the week. On Friday alone, the airstrikes have claimed the lives of at least 25 people.
Israeli sources suggest that while Hezbollah has broadened its operational range, launching attacks deeper into northern areas, including Haifa, it has yet to unleash its full firepower.
One Israeli general who spoke anonymously with media outlets remarked that Hezbollah had not utilized even 10 percent of its military capabilities. An Israeli journalist, author and military affairs expert echoed this sentiment, cautioning that the situation between Israel and Hezbollah remains volatile and complex.
The situation in northern Israel is extremely dangerous as many communities very close to the border with Lebanon have been evacuated, and cities like Tiberias have seen their population swell with internally displaced people. Tiberias has seen its population increase by 20 percent due to the evacuations and has become a focal point in the escalating tensions.
As the exchanges of fire continue, the Israel Defense Forces reaffirmed its commitment to striking Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, with an emphasis on dismantling the group’s military capabilities.
The military stated that they were targeting missile launchers, weapon storage facilities, and other infrastructure linked to Hezbollah’s operations.
Reports from Lebanese state media indicated that Israeli airstrikes resulted in civilian casualties, including four fatalities and numerous injuries in the town of Tayr Debba.
As violence spread, images from Beirut showcased the devastation wrought by airstrikes, with smoke rising ominously above the skyline.
The capital has not been spared, suffering multiple airstrikes in recent days, including the one that resulted in the death of Nasrallah, a loss that has only further fueled Hezbollah’s resolve to retaliate against Israel.
