In a poignant account delivered to Israel’s finance committee, a relative of recently released Israeli captives laid bare a series of startling revelations. The relative named Noam Dan accused the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of friendly fire deaths and condemned the government for suppressing the families’ voices.
Dan disclosed that three hostages were killed by Israeli fire during the conflict – a revelation that aligns with statements made by Yarden Bibas, an Israeli captive in Gaza.
Bibas claimed that an Israeli airstrike, ordered by the military, resulted in the tragic death of his wife and two children, prompting a heartfelt plea to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for assistance in negotiating the release of their bodies.
The emotional testimony exposed the harsh realities faced by the families of the captives and highlighted the severe trauma inflicted by Israeli bombings, which returning abductees described as the most horrifying aspect of their captivity.
According to Israeli television producer Hagai Levi, these individuals recounted experiences that evoked images of hell, earthquakes, and indescribable noise. The fear induced by the bombings surpassed concerns about potential harm from their captors. Despite the establishment of a temporary truce, the situation escalated on Dec. 1 when renewed Israeli bombardment led to accusations from Hamas that Israel deliberately sabotaged efforts to extend the ceasefire. Hamas claimed that Israel refused to release over 130 Palestinians captured during the truce, leading to a breakdown in negotiations.
In response, Hamas offered to hand over the bodies of dead detainees, including those from the Bibas family, but Israel allegedly rejected the proposal, choosing instead to resume military aggression.
Dan expressed frustration with the Israeli military’s actions, saying that they damaged houses where hostages were held and that sanctions on Gaza, imposed by Israel, endangered the health of the captives. Dan also criticized the military’s handling of the conflict, noting that the reputation of the IDF had suffered a blow, eroding public confidence in its ability to protect Israeli citizens.
“The biggest threat currently hovering over the heads of abductees is a military operation to rescue them. The families of the abductees and everyone around them should shout and scream do everything so that such an operation does not take place. Its chances of mass slaughter are about a hundred times its success,” wrote Levi.
The revelations during the testimony raised profound questions about military tactics, civilian casualties, and the overall impact on the affected families.
Meanwhile, Yuval Doron Castleman, the Israeli civilian mistakenly shot by Israeli soldiers in a friendly fire incident in West Jerusalem, has succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the hospital.
The incident occurred following an attack by two members of the Palestinian group Hamas in West Jerusalem, resulting in the death of four people and injuries to 12 others.
Castleman, 38, from Mvasirat Zion, west of Jerusalem, was severely injured when Israeli soldiers, in the chaos that ensued after the Hamas attack, mistakenly identified him as one of the assailants.
Video footage circulated on social media showed Castleman raising his hands and pleading with the soldiers not to shoot before being shot and falling to the ground.
The two Hamas attackers were subsequently killed by two off-duty Israeli soldiers and a civilian.
Netanyahu responded by ordering the demolition of the attackers’ homes in West Jerusalem. Additionally, Israeli police arrested six members of the attackers’ families, including their parents, after conducting raids on their homes.
Hamas later claimed responsibility for the shooting, further complicating an already tense situation in the region.
The friendly fire incident highlights the challenges faced by security forces in rapidly evolving and high-stress situations, where mis-identifications can lead to tragic consequences for innocent individuals.
